How to Start Freelancing in Bangladesh Without Any Experience

Almost every week someone walks into our Muradpur office and asks the same question: I have no experience and no client, so how do I even begin? It is a fair question, and the honest answer is that "experience" is not the wall it appears to be. What actually blocks most beginners is a smaller, more fixable problem: they have nothing concrete to show, and no clear sentence describing what they do.

This is the sequence we give people starting from zero. It assumes no degree, no contacts abroad, and no money to invest beyond an internet connection.

Pick one narrow service, not a field

"Graphic design" is a field. "Social media post design for restaurants" is a service. The second one gets hired; the first one gets ignored. A buyer scanning twenty profiles is looking for the person who has clearly done their exact thing before.

Narrow does not mean small. Consider how much work sits inside a single service:

  • Product photo editing and background removal for online sellers
  • Short-form video editing for reels and TikTok
  • Subtitle and caption work for YouTube channels
  • Data entry and catalogue formatting for e-commerce stores
  • Meta ad creative design for small local businesses

Choose based on what you can already tolerate doing for four hours straight. Interest matters less than tolerance, because the early months are repetitive by design.

Start narrow. One service, done visibly well, beats five listed vaguely.

Build proof before you build a profile

Do not open a marketplace account first. Open a folder first. Your goal is six to eight pieces that look like the work you want to be paid for — and unpaid practice work counts, provided you present it honestly.

Three sources of legitimate practice work:

  1. Redesigns. Take a real local business with a weak Facebook page and rebuild three of its posts properly. Show the original beside yours.
  2. Real work for people you know. Your uncle’s pharmacy, a friend’s clothing page, your department’s event. Small, real, and yours to show.
  3. Self-set briefs. Write a one-paragraph brief as if a client sent it, then answer it. Design schools call this a studio project, and it reads as professional as long as you label it accurately.

Never present practice work as a paid client project. Buyers check, and a single discovered exaggeration costs more than the empty portfolio ever did.

Set up the marketplace account properly

Fiverr and Upwork both work from Bangladesh. Fiverr suits beginners better, because buyers come to you and pricing is fixed — so you are not competing on proposal writing in a second language on day one.

Things that measurably matter on a new profile:

  • A clear photo of your face, well lit, plain background. Not a logo.
  • A title that names the service and the buyer, not your ambition.
  • Portfolio images at the exact dimensions the platform recommends, so nothing crops badly.
  • A description written in short sentences. If your English is uneven, shorter sentences hide it; long ones expose it.
  • Skill tags matching the search terms buyers type, not the terms you would use.

About pricing at the start

Price low enough that a buyer taking a chance on an unrated seller feels no risk, then raise it once you have five reviews. Underpricing early is a marketing cost with an end date — not a permanent position. Decide in advance what the price becomes after review five, and actually change it.

Getting paid in Bangladesh

Payoneer into a local bank account is the standard route, and both Fiverr and Upwork support it. Set this up before your first order, not after: verification can take several days, and a delayed withdrawal on your first job is a bad way to learn the process.

Keep a simple record of every order from the beginning — date, client, amount, hours spent. You will need it to work out your real hourly rate, and later, if you register a business, for tax.

The first three months are about learning delivery, not earning. Budget for that.

What the first three months actually look like

Realistically: a lot of silence, some low-value orders, and one or two clients who are difficult in ways nobody warned you about. This is normal, and it is not a signal to quit. The people who succeed are usually not the most talented in the room — they are the ones still sending proposals in week seven when nothing has landed yet.

What we can say honestly is this: the skills are learnable, the market is real, and the path is well travelled by people from exactly your background. What nobody can honestly promise is a specific income by a specific date. Anyone who does is selling you something.

A four-week starting plan

  • Week 1: Choose the service. Study how the top ten sellers in that category present themselves. Write down what they all do.
  • Week 2: Produce four practice pieces. Get them criticised by someone who will actually be blunt with you.
  • Week 3: Fix them. Produce two more. Set up Payoneer.
  • Week 4: Publish the profile, list one service, respond to briefs daily.

If you would rather do this with structure and someone checking your work, that is essentially what our freelancing and design courses are — the same sequence, compressed, with a mentor telling you when a portfolio piece is not good enough yet.
